Plant Microbe Ecology

The Plant Microbial Ecology (PME) team aims to make cutting-edge advances in understanding the underlying principles of plant and soil community assembly and how this plays out on ecosystem functioning in the context of enviro-climatic change. Notably our work encompasses understanding the functional attributes of above- and belowground communities, and how these contribute to the resistance and resilience of ecosystems in a changing world. The knowledge we develop is key for developing management tools to improve ecosystem sustainability facing climate change. To answer our ecological questions, which are overall of fundamental nature, we draw on a combination of fieldwork across spatial scales, lab-studies and mesocosms experiments.
PME is part of the Department of Ecology, at the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences, Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

OUR GOAL

Plant-Microbe interactions play a key role in maintaining ecosystem functions in a changing climate. We aim to understand these interactions

Field work

Store Mosse NP

The team went on field work (2-12 May) in the Store Mosse NP, Sweden, where we run a peatland plant removal experiment since 2010. This time we brought new postdoc Carrie Thomas, three MSc students, and two foresters from the Dutch State Forestry Service (Staatsbosbeheer).

March 12-15, we visited the Nordic Oikos conference in Lund. Janna Barel – outgoing postdoc – and Bjorn gave an oral presentation.

Having Fun

Writing retreat

After the Nordic Oikos conference, we enjoyed a writing retreat in the Store Mosse National park. We took our new colleague Dina in 't Zandt. One afternoon, we went skiing at Isaberg.
